Ceyx (bird)
Ceyx is a genus of small kingfishers in the family Alcedinidae. These kingfishers are typically found in tropical regions of Asia, Africa, and Australasia.
The genus Ceyx is characterized by its small size, bright coloration (often featuring blues, reds, and yellows), and short tails. Many species within the genus are forest dwellers, inhabiting areas near streams, rivers, and wetlands where they can hunt for small fish, insects, and crustaceans.
The taxonomy of Ceyx has been subject to revision. Some species formerly placed in Ceyx have been moved to other genera based on phylogenetic analysis. Current classifications may vary depending on the source.
Notable characteristics of Ceyx kingfishers include:
- Size: Generally small, ranging from 13 to 15 cm in length.
- Coloration: Vibrant plumage, often with combinations of blue, red, yellow, and white.
- Habitat: Primarily forested areas near water sources.
- Diet: Small fish, insects, and crustaceans.
- Distribution: Tropical regions of Asia, Africa, and Australasia.
Species currently recognized within the genus Ceyx (as of late 2023, but subject to change based on ongoing research) can include, but are not limited to:
- Azure Kingfisher (Ceyx azureus)
- Green-backed Kingfisher (Ceyx erithaca)
- Madagascar Kingfisher (Ceyx madagascariensis)
The name Ceyx is derived from Greek mythology. Ceyx was the king of Trachis who drowned at sea. His wife, Alcyone, was so grief-stricken that the gods transformed them both into kingfishers.
