Acidaspis

Acidaspis is an extinct genus of trilobite belonging to the order Lichida. These marine arthropods lived during the Silurian period, from approximately 443 to 419 million years ago.

Acidaspis trilobites are characterized by their highly ornamented exoskeletons, featuring prominent spines and tubercles. The cephalon (head shield) typically bears multiple spines, and the thorax (mid-body section) is also often adorned with spines along its segments. The pygidium (tail shield) can range in size and shape, and may also possess spines.

Their distinctive morphology is thought to have served various purposes, potentially including defense against predators, stabilization on the seafloor, or even sensory functions.

Acidaspis fossils have been found in various locations around the world, providing valuable insights into the ancient marine ecosystems of the Silurian period. Their relatively small size and intricate ornamentation make them popular among fossil collectors. Their morphology is significantly different from other Trilobites, placing them in a unique position within the Trilobite order.
