Bet Twice
Bet Twice (foaled March 23, 1984, died February 27, 2012) was an American Thoroughbred racehorse best known for defeating Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes winner Ferdinand in the 1987 Belmont Stakes.
Bred by Robert E. Brennan's Due Process Stable, Bet Twice was sired by Key to the Mint out of the mare All Blue, by Herbager. Trained by Warren A. "Jimmy" Croll, Jr., he was owned by Brennan's Due Process Stable.
As a three-year-old, Bet Twice finished second to Ferdinand in the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes. He then dramatically reversed the form in the Belmont Stakes, winning by 14 lengths over Ferdinand, who finished third. His Belmont victory was notable for being one of the largest winning margins in the race's history and preventing Ferdinand from achieving the Triple Crown.
Following his Belmont Stakes victory, Bet Twice continued to race, though he did not achieve the same level of success. He was retired from racing in 1988.
After his racing career, Bet Twice stood at stud. He was later pensioned and lived at Old Friends Equine in Georgetown, Kentucky, until his death in 2012.
