Bertius

Bertius is a Latinized surname, most notably associated with the Dutch cartographer, historian, geographer, and theologian Petrus Bertius (1565-1629). He was born Pieter de Bert, and adopted the Latinized form, common for scholars of his time.

Petrus Bertius is best known for his contributions to cartography, particularly his pocket atlas, the Tabularum Geographicarum Contractarum Libri Septem. This atlas, published in numerous editions and languages, offered a concise overview of the world as it was known in the early 17th century. It was considered a popular and influential work for its time, contributing to the dissemination of geographical knowledge.

Beyond cartography, Bertius also wrote on historical and theological subjects. He served as a professor of mathematics and later as a professor of theology at Leiden University. His academic work also included the publication of classical texts.

The name Bertius, therefore, is primarily connected to Petrus Bertius and, through him, to the fields of cartography, geography, history, and theology in the early modern period.
