Paul Chapman (musician)

Paul Raymond Chapman (June 9, 1954 – June 9, 2020) was a Welsh rock guitarist best known for his work with the band UFO. He replaced Michael Schenker in UFO in 1974, left in 1975, and then rejoined permanently in 1978, remaining with them until 1983. His distinctive playing style became a key part of UFO's sound during their commercially successful period, contributing to albums like No Place to Run, The Wild, the Willing and the Innocent, and Mechanix.

Prior to joining UFO, Chapman played in several bands, including Skid Row (not the American band of the same name), and Kimla Taz. Following his departure from UFO, he formed his own band, Waysted, in 1983 with Pete Way, UFO's bassist. He continued to perform and record with Waysted and also worked as a session musician.

Chapman's guitar playing was characterized by a blues-rock style infused with heavy metal influences. His solos often showcased technical proficiency and melodic sensibility. He cited Jeff Beck and Eric Clapton as major influences.

Paul Chapman passed away on his 66th birthday, June 9, 2020.
