USS Sculpin (SSN-590)
The USS Sculpin (SSN-590) was a Skipjack-class nuclear-powered fast attack submarine of the United States Navy. She was the second ship named for the sculpin, a family of fish.
Sculpin was launched on 15 January 1960 and commissioned on 1 June 1961. Throughout her career, Sculpin participated in numerous Cold War operations, including deployments to the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. She was known for her high speed and agility, typical of the Skipjack class.
A significant incident occurred in November 1969 when Sculpin experienced a major onboard fire while submerged. Despite the challenging conditions, the crew managed to control the blaze, though several sailors were injured.
Sculpin was decommissioned on 3 August 1990 and stricken from the Naval Vessel Register on 6 August 1990. She was subsequently disposed of through the Nuclear Powered Ship and Submarine Recycling Program at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard.
