Kleider machen Leute (opera)

Kleider machen Leute is an opera in a prologue and two acts by Alexander Zemlinsky, composed between 1907 and 1909. The libretto, by Leo Feld, is based on the novella of the same name by Gottfried Keller.

The opera tells the story of Wenzel Strapinski, a poor tailor who is mistaken for a Polish count due to his fine clothing. He enjoys the mistaken identity and the elevated social status it brings, including the affections of Nettchen, the daughter of a councilman. However, his true identity is eventually revealed, leading to shame and disgrace. Ultimately, Wenzel's honesty and true character win Nettchen's heart despite his humble origins.

Kleider machen Leute explores themes of social class, appearance versus reality, and the power of clothing to shape perceptions. Zemlinsky's score is richly orchestrated and features elements of late Romanticism and early Expressionism. The opera is known for its lyrical beauty and dramatic intensity, particularly in its depiction of Wenzel's internal struggles and the hypocrisy of the townspeople. It is considered one of Zemlinsky's most significant works, though it was not initially a success and has experienced periods of neglect before being revived in recent decades.
