Moa Island (Queensland)

Moa Island, also known as Banks Island, is one of the Torres Strait Islands located in Queensland, Australia. It is situated in the western group of islands, approximately 40 kilometers (25 miles) west of Thursday Island.

Geography: Moa Island is characterized by its relatively flat topography compared to some of the other Torres Strait Islands. It has a land area of approximately 172 square kilometers (66 square miles). The island is surrounded by coral reefs and shallow waters.

Population: The population of Moa Island is concentrated in two main communities: Kubin and St. Pauls. Kubin is located on the southwest coast and has a predominantly Muralag (Western Torres Strait) population. St. Pauls, situated on the east coast, is historically associated with the Badu Island community and has a distinct cultural identity. According to the most recent census data, the island has a small population, typical for many of the Torres Strait Islands.

Culture and History: The Indigenous people of Moa Island are of Melanesian descent.
