West River (Ontario)
The West River is a short river located in the province of Ontario, Canada. It flows primarily through the Regional Municipality of Durham, specifically within the Township of Uxbridge. Its source is generally considered to be a series of small tributaries and drainage systems originating in the Oak Ridges Moraine.
The river flows generally southward, eventually emptying into Lake Scugog. Lake Scugog is part of the Trent-Severn Waterway, a canal route connecting Lake Ontario to Georgian Bay (Lake Huron).
The West River, though not a major waterway, plays a role in the local ecosystem, providing habitat for various fish species and contributing to the overall water quality of Lake Scugog. It is also used for recreational activities such as fishing and canoeing, albeit on a limited scale.
Land use surrounding the West River is a mix of agricultural, rural residential, and natural areas. Conservation efforts are undertaken to protect the river's water quality and riparian habitat.
