Battersea (UK Parliament constituency)
Battersea is a constituency represented in the House of Commons of the UK Parliament since 2017 by Marsha de Cordova of the Labour Party.
History
The constituency has undergone several boundary changes since its creation. Originally, Battersea consisted of two separate constituencies: Battersea North and Battersea South. These were created in 1918. Following boundary reviews, these were subsequently reorganized. In 1974, the constituencies were replaced by Battersea North and Battersea South.
In 1983, further boundary changes saw the creation of a single Battersea constituency. From 1983 to 2010, the seat was a bellwether, closely mirroring the national result. From 1983 to 1997 it was held by John Bowis of the Conservative Party. Martin Linton then won the seat for Labour in 1997 and held it until 2010.
In 2010, the constituency boundaries were redrawn, incorporating parts of the former Putney constituency. This resulted in a seat that was considered more marginal. Jane Ellison of the Conservative Party won the seat in 2010 and held it until 2017.
Boundaries
The constituency covers the area of Battersea in the London Borough of Wandsworth. The area is located south of the River Thames. The wards included are primarily those within Battersea itself, although precise boundaries have varied over time due to electoral boundary reviews.
