Stroud's (restaurant)

Stroud's is a Kansas City-area restaurant chain known primarily for its pan-fried chicken. Established in 1933, the original location, known as Stroud's Oak Ridge Manor, was a small roadhouse located just north of Kansas City.

Initially serving barbecue and sandwiches, Stroud's gained prominence after World War II when it began featuring pan-fried chicken as its signature dish. The restaurant's recipe and cooking method, involving slow pan-frying in lard, contributes to its crispy skin and juicy meat.

Stroud's maintains a casual, family-style atmosphere. The tradition of passing around platters of pan-fried chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, and green beans fosters a sense of communal dining. The staff is also known for their boisterous greetings and the custom of throwing plates upon entering the kitchen, though this practice is now less common.
