Amathes
Amathes (plural: Amathetes) is a term used in classical entomology, particularly concerning Lepidoptera (butterflies and moths), to describe a genus of butterfly that was historically classified within the Nymphalidae family. The genus Amathes is no longer considered a valid taxonomic classification. The species formerly assigned to Amathes have been reclassified into other existing genera, primarily within the subtribe Euptychiina of the Satyrinae subfamily of Nymphalidae.
The name Amathes and associated classifications were based on morphological characteristics and perceived phylogenetic relationships that, with modern molecular phylogenetics, have been revised. Species previously identified as belonging to Amathes are now distributed among various genera, including, but not limited to, Euptychia and related genera.
Researchers and taxonomic databases (such as the Integrated Taxonomic Information System (ITIS) or the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF)) no longer recognize Amathes as a valid genus. When encountering the term Amathes in older literature, it is crucial to consult current taxonomic databases to ascertain the present classification of the specific butterfly species in question. The historical usage of Amathes provides insight into the evolution of insect taxonomy and the impact of modern phylogenetic methods on understanding butterfly classification.
