Slapp Happy (album)

Slapp Happy is the self-titled debut studio album by the avant-pop band Slapp Happy. It was originally released in 1972 on Polydor Records in Germany. Due to disagreements with the record label regarding the album's production and potential for commercial success, it was later remixed and re-recorded with different vocals and instrumentation, resulting in the album that is generally known and widely available today. The original German Polydor release is often referred to as the "lost" or "unreleased" Slapp Happy album, though copies do exist.

The album is characterized by its unconventional arrangements, experimental instrumentation, and distinctive vocals of Dagmar Krause. Musically, it blends elements of art rock, cabaret, and avant-garde pop, creating a sound that is both whimsical and unsettling. The lyrics are often surreal and absurdist, reflecting the band's unique artistic vision.

The remixed and re-recorded version, also self-titled, features a more polished production and slightly altered arrangements, intended to appeal to a wider audience. While still retaining the band's characteristic eccentricities, it presents a more accessible entry point to Slapp Happy's discography. This latter version is more commonly available on CD and streaming services.
