William Bell (singer)

William Bell (born William Yarborough, July 16, 1939) is an American soul singer and songwriter, regarded as one of the pioneers of the genre. He is best known for his influential contributions to the Stax Records sound and his enduring hits, including "You Don't Miss Your Water," "Everybody Loves a Winner," and "Tryin' to Love Two."

Bell began his career in the mid-1950s, performing with various vocal groups in Memphis, Tennessee. He signed with Stax Records in 1961, where he quickly established himself as a key figure in the label's burgeoning soul music scene. His early recordings, characterized by their raw emotional intensity and vulnerability, helped to define the emerging Memphis soul style.

"You Don't Miss Your Water," released in 1961, is considered a soul music standard and remains one of Bell's most beloved songs. His other hits, such as "Everybody Loves a Winner" (co-written with Booker T. Jones) and "Private Number" (a duet with Judy Clay), further cemented his reputation as a gifted singer and songwriter.

Beyond his work as a performer, Bell is also a highly respected songwriter, having penned songs for numerous artists, including Sam & Dave, Otis Redding, and Etta James.

After leaving Stax Records in the late 1960s, Bell continued to record and perform, establishing his own record label, Peachtree Records. He has received numerous awards and accolades throughout his career, including a Grammy Award for his 2016 album, This Is Where I Live. He was inducted into the Memphis Music Hall of Fame in 2017.
