Gestodene

Gestodene is a synthetic progestogen, a type of hormone similar to progesterone. It is used in some combined oral contraceptive pills (COCPs), also known as birth control pills. Gestodene belongs to the third generation of progestogens.

As a component of COCPs, gestodene functions primarily to prevent ovulation. It also thickens cervical mucus, making it difficult for sperm to reach the egg, and alters the lining of the uterus to prevent implantation of a fertilized egg.

COCPs containing gestodene are typically used for contraception and can also be prescribed to treat symptoms related to menstruation, such as dysmenorrhea (painful periods) and menorrhagia (heavy periods).

While effective as a contraceptive, COCPs containing third-generation progestogens like gestodene have been associated with a slightly increased risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE), such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE), compared to COCPs containing older progestogens like levonorgestrel. This risk, while still relatively low, should be considered when prescribing and choosing a contraceptive method. Health care providers consider a patient's individual risk factors for VTE when determining the suitability of gestodene-containing COCPs.

The use of gestodene-containing contraceptives is contraindicated in certain individuals, including those with a history of VTE, certain cardiovascular conditions, liver disease, or some types of cancer. A thorough medical history and physical examination are required before prescribing these medications. Common side effects can include nausea, breast tenderness, headaches, and mood changes.
