Bilbo (sword)

Bilbo, in the context of J.R.R. Tolkien's legendarium, specifically The Hobbit, refers to a short sword (or, more accurately, a long knife for a hobbit) found by Bilbo Baggins in a troll-hoard.

Origin and Description:

The sword was made by Elves in Gondolin, a lost city of the First Age. Its blade glows blue when Orcs or goblins are near, serving as an early warning system. Because hobbits are smaller than men, elves, and dwarves, Bilbo found the sword to be of suitable length to wield effectively, unlike most other races for whom it would have been too short to be a practical sword.

Significance:

Bilbo names the sword "Sting." The sword proves invaluable to Bilbo during his adventures, aiding him in escaping Mirkwood spiders and confronting other dangers. It represents Bilbo's growing courage and resourcefulness throughout the journey. He later passes Sting down to Frodo Baggins. The name "Sting" and the sword itself become synonymous with Bilbo's personal bravery and his departure from his comfortable, uneventful hobbit life.
