Spadebill

A spadebill is a small passerine bird belonging to the genus Platyrinchus within the Tyrannidae family, commonly known as the tyrant flycatchers. These birds are characterized by their distinctive broad, flattened bills which give them their name.

Spadebills are typically found in the understory of humid tropical and subtropical forests of Central and South America. They are insectivorous, foraging by gleaning insects and spiders from foliage. Their flattened bills are believed to aid in capturing insects from crevices and tight spaces.

Species within the Platyrinchus genus include:

  • Golden-crowned Spadebill (Platyrinchus coronatus)
  • White-throated Spadebill (Platyrinchus mystaceus)
  • Russet-winged Spadebill (Platyrinchus leucoryphus)
  • Cinnamon-crowned Spadebill (Platyrinchus saturatus)

Spadebills are generally inconspicuous and relatively inactive, often remaining perched quietly within the dense vegetation. They are more easily located by their distinctive calls, which vary between species but are often described as sharp, high-pitched sounds.

Conservation status varies among the spadebill species, with some being more vulnerable due to habitat loss and degradation.
