Muraqabah

Muraqabah (Arabic: مراقبة) is an Islamic concept referring to the practice of contemplative awareness or spiritual vigilance. It is often described as observing, guarding, and attending to the heart, and it plays a significant role in Sufism, the mystical branch of Islam.

Muraqabah involves focusing one's attention on God's presence and awareness, striving to be mindful of one's thoughts, actions, and intentions in relation to the Divine. It is a process of self-observation and self-discipline aimed at purifying the heart from negative qualities such as egoism, pride, envy, and attachment to worldly desires.

The practice of Muraqabah can take various forms, including silent contemplation, meditation on specific divine attributes or names, or focusing on the breath. The ultimate goal is to achieve a state of constant awareness of God and to develop a deeper connection with the Divine.

Muraqabah is considered an essential tool for spiritual growth and self-improvement in Sufism. It helps the seeker to overcome the distractions of the material world and to cultivate inner peace, humility, and love for God. Different Sufi orders (Tariqas) may have their own specific techniques and guidelines for practicing Muraqabah, but the underlying principle remains the same: to be constantly mindful of God's presence and to strive for spiritual purification. It is often practiced under the guidance of a spiritual mentor or guide (Murshid).
