John Hegarty (academic)

John Hegarty is an Irish academic specializing in physics, particularly in the area of nonlinear optics and photonics. He is Professor Emeritus at Trinity College Dublin (TCD), where he held the position of Professor of Photonics and served as Head of the School of Physics. His research interests include the study of light-matter interactions in semiconductor materials and the development of novel photonic devices.

Hegarty received his PhD in Physics from University College Cork (UCC). His work has contributed significantly to the understanding and advancement of optical technologies. He has been involved in various research projects funded by national and international agencies, and has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals. He is recognized for his contributions to both fundamental research and the application of photonics in areas such as telecommunications and sensing.
