The Thing (character)
The Thing is a fictional character appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. Created by writer Stan Lee and artist Jack Kirby, he first appeared in The Fantastic Four #1 (November 1961). He is a founding member of the Fantastic Four.
Benjamin Jacob "Ben" Grimm was a skilled pilot and college football star before gaining superhuman powers during an unauthorized test flight into space. Exposure to cosmic radiation transformed him into a monstrous, orange, rock-like humanoid. He possesses immense superhuman strength, stamina, and durability due to his altered physiology. His rocky hide is virtually invulnerable to most forms of physical and energy attacks.
Despite his intimidating appearance, Ben is a kind, loyal, and courageous individual. He often struggles with the emotional toll of his transformation and the perceived loss of his humanity, a recurring theme throughout his comic book appearances. He is known for his gruff demeanor and signature catchphrase, "It's clobberin' time!".
The Thing has been a central figure in numerous Fantastic Four storylines and has also appeared in various solo adventures and team-ups with other Marvel characters. He is a popular and enduring character in the Marvel Universe and has been adapted into various media, including animated television series, live-action films, and video games. His relationships with his teammates, particularly Reed Richards (Mr. Fantastic), Sue Storm (Invisible Woman), and Johnny Storm (Human Torch), are integral to the dynamics of the Fantastic Four.
