Tom Hyer

Tom Hyer (January 1, 1819 – June 25, 1864) was an American bare-knuckle boxer. He is generally considered the first American heavyweight champion, although that title was not formally recognized at the time. Hyer was known for his size and strength, and his fighting style was characterized by aggressive punching.

Hyer's most famous fight was against Yankee Sullivan in 1849, a highly publicized event that drew a large crowd and intense media attention. Hyer defeated Sullivan after a grueling 76-round battle, cementing his reputation as a top fighter. This fight also solidified Hyer's status as a symbol of American nativism against the Irish immigrant Sullivan.

Following his boxing career, Hyer became involved in various business ventures, including owning a saloon. He also maintained a prominent position in New York City's political and social circles. He died in 1864.
