Berkeley station (Southern Pacific Railroad)
The Berkeley station was a passenger rail station in Berkeley, California, served by the Southern Pacific Railroad (SP). Located at University Avenue and 4th Street, it was a significant transportation hub for the city and surrounding areas for several decades. The station primarily served commuters traveling between Berkeley and San Francisco, as well as other destinations along the Southern Pacific's network.
The original station building, constructed in the early 20th century, was a notable example of Beaux-Arts architecture, reflecting the style of many prominent railroad stations of that era. It featured waiting rooms, ticket offices, and other amenities for passengers. Over time, the station underwent modifications and renovations to accommodate changing needs and ridership levels.
Following the decline of passenger rail service in the mid-20th century, the Southern Pacific discontinued service to the Berkeley station. The station building was eventually demolished, and the site was redeveloped. While the original station is no longer extant, its historical significance to Berkeley's transportation history remains important. The area previously occupied by the station has been transformed into a mixed-use development. Today, Amtrak's Capitol Corridor service provides rail access to Berkeley via a different station located downtown.
