Dabhol
Dabhol is a coastal town located in the Ratnagiri district of Maharashtra, India. It is situated on the Arabian Sea coast and is known for the Dabhol Power Company (DPC), a large and controversial power project.
Dabhol is historically significant, having served as a trading port in ancient times. Its harbor provided access to the interior regions of Maharashtra.
The Dabhol Power Company, initially a joint venture between Enron, General Electric, and Bechtel, played a pivotal role in the town's modern history. The project faced numerous challenges, including disputes over pricing, allegations of corruption, and legal battles, ultimately leading to its shutdown and subsequent restructuring. The power plant is now operational under new ownership.
The local economy of Dabhol is influenced by the presence of the power plant, although fishing and agriculture also contribute to the livelihoods of the residents. The town has experienced both positive and negative impacts from the power project, including infrastructure development and environmental concerns.
