Thinset
Thinset mortar, often simply referred to as "thinset," is a cement-based adhesive specifically formulated for bonding tile and stone to a substrate. Unlike traditional thick-bed mortars which are applied in layers several inches thick, thinset is applied in a thin layer, typically 1/8 to 3/16 of an inch, hence the name.
Thinset is composed of fine sand, cement (usually Portland cement), and water-retentive additives such as polymers. These additives enhance its bonding strength, flexibility, and workability. The specific proportions of these components, as well as the addition of other specialized chemicals, determine the thinset's suitability for different types of tile (e.g., ceramic, porcelain, natural stone, glass), substrate materials (e.g., concrete, plywood, drywall), and environmental conditions (e.g., wet areas, freeze-thaw cycles).
Different types of thinset are available, classified by their performance characteristics as specified by ANSI standards. Common classifications include:

Unmodified Thinset: Basic thinset requiring the addition of a latex additive for improved performance and bonding with certain tiles and substrates.

Modified Thinset: Contains polymers that enhance bonding, flexibility, and water resistance. These thinsets generally do not require additional additives. Modified thinsets are further categorized based on the type and amount of polymer modification (e.g., high-polymer modified).

Large Format Tile (LFT) Mortar: Specifically designed for installing large format tiles, providing increased sag resistance and support.
The selection of the appropriate thinset mortar is crucial for the long-term performance and durability of a tile installation. Factors to consider include the type of tile, the substrate material, the intended use of the tiled area (e.g., floors, walls, showers), and any specific manufacturer recommendations. Improper thinset selection can lead to tile cracking, delamination, and other installation failures.
