Edward Burgh (knight)

Sir Edward Burgh (c. 1464 – 20 August 1533) was an English knight and landowner, primarily known for his connections to the Tudor dynasty and his various administrative roles.

Born the son of Sir Thomas Burgh, 1st Baron Burgh, Edward Burgh distinguished himself through military service and courtly duties. He was knighted, although the exact date is not consistently documented. He held positions within the royal household and was involved in the administration of lands, demonstrating his loyalty and trustworthiness to the crown.

Burgh married Anne Cobham, daughter of Thomas Cobham, 5th Baron Cobham, further solidifying his social standing. The couple had several children, who went on to hold various positions of prominence. Through his descendants, Sir Edward Burgh has a notable lineage connected to influential families during the Tudor period.

His will, proven in 1533, provides insights into his land holdings and possessions, offering a glimpse into the life of a landed knight of the era. He is buried in Gainsborough Old Hall chapel.

While not a major historical figure in the same vein as some of his contemporaries, Edward Burgh's life exemplifies that of a significant member of the gentry class, who contributed to the stability and functioning of English society under the early Tudors.
