Sid Collins (broadcaster)
Sid Collins (1922-1977) was an American sports broadcaster, best known as the "Voice of the 500" for his play-by-play commentary of the Indianapolis 500 auto race on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Radio Network from 1952 until his death in 1977.
Collins' announcing style was characterized by its folksy delivery, enthusiasm, and in-depth knowledge of the race and its participants. He developed a deep connection with the drivers and fans, becoming a beloved figure in the sport. He was known for his signature phrases, including "Stay tuned to the greatest spectacle in racing!" and his emotional calls of victory laps.
Beyond the Indianapolis 500, Collins broadcast other auto races and sporting events, primarily in the Midwest. He also hosted a popular sports talk show on WIBC radio in Indianapolis.
Collins' tenure as the lead broadcaster of the Indianapolis 500 spanned some of the race's most iconic and dramatic moments. His descriptions helped elevate the event to legendary status, and he is considered a broadcasting icon by many racing enthusiasts.
