Be More Chill (musical)
Be More Chill is a musical with music and lyrics by Joe Iconis and a book by Joe Tracz, based on the 2004 novel of the same name by Ned Vizzini. The musical tells the story of Jeremy Heere, an unpopular high school student who ingests a supercomputer in the form of a pill, known as a "Squip," that promises to make him cool.
The musical premiered in 2015 at the Two River Theater in Red Bank, New Jersey. After a significant online following developed, fueled by its cast recording on Spotify and YouTube, it had an Off-Broadway run at the Pershing Square Signature Center in 2018. Its popularity led to a Broadway transfer to the Lyceum Theatre in 2019. While the Broadway production had a relatively short run, the musical's fanbase has continued to thrive through amateur productions, regional theatre, and online communities.
The story explores themes of popularity, anxiety, self-acceptance, and the dangers of relying on technology for validation. The score blends pop, rock, and contemporary musical theatre styles, reflecting the anxieties and aspirations of teenage life. Notable songs include "More Than Survive," "Michael in the Bathroom," and "The Squip Song."
The musical has been praised for its relatable characters, catchy music, and its exploration of mental health and social pressures faced by teenagers in the digital age. However, it has also faced criticism for some of its plot elements and characterizations. Despite mixed critical reception, Be More Chill remains a popular and influential work in contemporary musical theatre, particularly among younger audiences.
