The Amguema is known for its challenging rapids and swift currents, making it a popular destination for experienced kayakers and rafters. The river and its surrounding area are of significant ecological importance, providing habitat for various species of birds and mammals, including the brown bear, wolverine, and various migratory bird species. The Amguema is also an important spawning ground for several species of salmon.
The name "Amguema" is derived from a Chukchi word meaning "narrow gorge river."
