Statilia

Statilia was a Roman noblewoman who lived during the 1st century AD. She is primarily known as the third wife of the Roman Emperor Nero.

Born into a prominent aristocratic family, Statilia Messalina was the daughter of Titus Statilius Taurus, who served as consul in 11 AD, and Valeria Messalina, a relative of the emperor Claudius. Her first marriage was to Marcus Julius Vestinus Atticus, a consul in 65 AD. Nero, reportedly infatuated with her beauty, orchestrated the death of Vestinus Atticus under the pretext of treason in 66 AD. Soon after, Nero divorced his second wife, Poppaea Sabina (who may have also died under suspicious circumstances), and married Statilia Messalina in the same year.

As empress, Statilia maintained a low profile and wielded little discernible political influence. She survived Nero's death in 68 AD and the subsequent civil war.

After Nero's death, Statilia lived in relative obscurity. Later sources suggest she may have briefly married Marcus Otho, who briefly served as emperor in 69 AD, though this is debated by historians. The date and circumstances of her death are unknown.
