Wolfgang Becker (director, born 1954)

Wolfgang Becker (born February 22, 1954) is a German film director and screenwriter. He is best known for directing the critically acclaimed tragicomedy Good Bye, Lenin! (2003), which won numerous awards including the German Film Award for Best Film, Best Director, and Best Actor.

Becker studied German and History before attending the German Academy for Film and Television (DFFB) in Berlin. Before directing feature films, he worked as a cameraman and editor. His early directorial work includes the short film Schmetterlinge (1988) and the television film Kinderspiele (1992).

His feature films include Life is All You Get (Das Leben ist eine Baustelle) (1997), a romantic comedy addressing social issues, and Good Bye, Lenin!. After Good Bye, Lenin!, Becker directed My Life with Durrells (Ich und Kaminski) (2015), a film adaptation of Daniel Kehlmann's novel. He has also directed episodes of the television series Deutschland 83 (2015) and Deutschland 86 (2018). Becker's work is often characterized by a blend of humor and social commentary, exploring themes of identity, history, and societal change within a humanistic framework.
