Yang Ding (Chouchi)

Yang Ding (died 443), posthumously honored as King Yuan of Chouchi, was a ruler of the Chouchi state during the Sixteen Kingdoms period of Chinese history. He was a member of the Di ethnicity and a descendant of Yang Ju, who founded Chouchi in the late 3rd century.

Yang Ding's reign began in 442 after the death of his predecessor, Yang Baozong. He continued to navigate the complex political landscape of the time, primarily dealing with the Northern Wei dynasty to the north. Records indicate that Chouchi generally maintained a tributary relationship with Northern Wei during Yang Ding's rule, seeking protection and avoiding direct conflict.

Yang Ding's death in 443 marked a relatively peaceful transition within Chouchi, as he was succeeded by his son, Yang Wende. Historical accounts offer limited details about specific policies or military campaigns undertaken during Yang Ding’s short reign, but emphasize the overall stability maintained within Chouchi under his leadership amidst the larger volatile environment of the Sixteen Kingdoms period. His posthumous title, King Yuan, suggests a level of respect and recognition for his efforts in maintaining the state's existence.
