Peleuli
Peleuli is a small, uninhabited island located in the Pacific Ocean, part of the Caroline Islands archipelago within the Federated States of Micronesia. It lies within the state of Yap, specifically as part of the Ulithi Atoll.
Geographically, Peleuli is a low-lying coral island. Its significance is primarily historical, stemming from its role in World War II. In 1944, it served as a Japanese seaplane base and communications center. As such, it was targeted during the American campaign to liberate the Caroline Islands. The island was subjected to aerial bombardment and naval gunfire.
Today, Peleuli remains largely uninhabited. Its limited size and resources do not readily support a permanent population. The island's value lies more in its historical significance and as part of the wider Ulithi Atoll ecosystem. Access is primarily by boat, and the island is rarely visited. Its environment remains relatively undisturbed, although remnants of the wartime conflict can still be found.
