Dave Elder (born February 6, 1942) is a former American politician who served as a Democratic Congressman representing California's 37th congressional district (later renumbered as the 36th district) from 1979 to 1993.
Elder was born in Long Beach, California. Prior to his congressional service, he was a member of the California State Senate representing the 35th district from 1976 to 1978, and before that, he served in the California State Assembly from 1974 to 1976, representing the 57th district.
During his time in Congress, Elder focused on issues related to maritime commerce and the ports of California, given the presence of major ports in his district. He served on the Merchant Marine and Fisheries Committee and played a role in legislation concerning shipping and trade.
Elder's political career ended after being implicated in the House banking scandal, where he was accused of writing bad checks at the House bank. He lost his re-election bid in 1992.
