Nox (video game)
Nox is an action role-playing game developed by Westwood Studios and published by Electronic Arts in 2000. It is known for its fast-paced combat, isometric perspective, and focus on single-player gameplay, although it included a multiplayer component.
The game features three distinct character classes: Warrior, Wizard, and Conjurer. Each class has unique skills, spells (for the magic-using classes), and gameplay styles. The Warrior excels in melee combat, the Wizard focuses on offensive magic, and the Conjurer specializes in summoning creatures and manipulating the environment.
The single-player campaign follows the story of Jack, a modern-day man accidentally transported to the fantasy world of Nox. He is tasked with defeating the evil sorceress Hecubah, who seeks to obtain a powerful artifact known as the Staff of Oblivion. Each class offers a unique campaign, providing different perspectives on the main storyline and utilizing class-specific abilities to overcome challenges.
Gameplay emphasizes strategic movement and resource management. While Warriors rely on weapon proficiency and tactical positioning, Wizards and Conjurers must carefully manage their mana and choose spells appropriate for the situation. The game features a "True Sight" system, which allows players to temporarily reveal hidden enemies and objects.
Nox received generally positive reviews upon release, praised for its engaging gameplay, diverse classes, and enjoyable multiplayer experience. Despite its initial success, it did not achieve widespread commercial success, partly due to its release coinciding with other popular titles in the action RPG genre. The game has gained a cult following over the years, and its influence can be seen in later isometric action RPGs. The game's multiplayer modes included capture the flag, arena deathmatch, and king of the realm.
