Yagub Mammadov (politician)

Yagub Javad oglu Mammadov (Azerbaijani: Yaqub Cavad oğlu Məmmədov; 3 March 1941 – 1 March 2002) was an Azerbaijani politician and medical doctor who served as the acting President of Azerbaijan from May 1992 to June 1992.

Early Life and Education:

Yagub Mammadov was born in the village of Aliabad in Nakhchivan. He received his medical education and qualified as a doctor. He later pursued further studies and earned a doctorate in medical sciences.

Political Career:

Mammadov was a member of the Azerbaijan Popular Front in the early 1990s. Following the resignation of Ayaz Mutallibov in May 1992 amidst escalating tensions in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and internal political turmoil, Mammadov, as the Chairman of the Supreme Soviet of Azerbaijan, became the acting President of Azerbaijan. He served in this capacity for approximately one month.

Presidency:

During his brief tenure as acting President, Mammadov oversaw the period leading up to the 1992 presidential elections. He did not run for president himself. His primary responsibility was to maintain stability and manage the transition of power.

Post-Presidency:

After Abulfaz Elchibey was elected president in June 1992, Mammadov returned to his role in academia and medical practice. He remained involved in public life but did not hold any further significant political positions.

Death:

Yagub Mammadov died on March 1, 2002, in Baku.
