NBA draft

The NBA Draft is an annual event in which the National Basketball Association (NBA) teams select eligible players, typically college basketball players, but also international players and those who have graduated high school at least one year prior. It serves as the primary mechanism for NBA teams to acquire young talent.

Eligibility and Entry:

Generally, to be eligible for the NBA draft, a player must be at least 19 years old during the calendar year of the draft. Domestically, U.S.-based players are automatically eligible if they are at least one year removed from their high school graduation. International players are also eligible if they meet the age requirement and have officially declared their intent to enter the draft. Players who wish to enter the draft must formally declare their eligibility by a specific deadline.

The Lottery:

The NBA Draft Lottery determines the order of selection for the first 14 picks of the draft. These 14 picks are awarded to the teams that did not make the playoffs in the preceding season. The lottery system uses a weighted probability system, giving the teams with the worst regular season records the highest chance of receiving the top picks. This system is designed to discourage teams from intentionally losing games ("tanking") to improve their draft position.

Draft Order:

After the lottery determines the top 14 picks, the remaining teams are ordered based on their regular season record from the preceding season, with the team with the worst record picking first among the non-lottery teams. The second round follows the same order as the first round, but teams are often involved in trades that alter the actual selection order.

The NBA Draft consists of two rounds, with each NBA team having one pick in each round (subject to trades). In each round, the teams select players in the established order.
