Plyussa

Plyussa is a settlement and former urban-type settlement in Plyussky District of Pskov Oblast, Russia. It is located on the Plyussa River, a tributary of the Narva. As a municipal division, it is incorporated as Plyussa Urban Settlement, one of the two urban settlements in the district.

History

Plyussa was first mentioned in chronicles in 1498. Throughout its history, it served as a border post and a point of contention in conflicts between Russia and Sweden. The Treaty of Plyussa, which ended the Russo-Swedish War (1590–1595), was signed near Plyussa in 1595. This treaty allowed Russia to retain control of territories captured during the war, but Russia had to relinquish its claims to Estonia.

Plyussa developed around a railway station built in 1916 on the Saint Petersburg – Vitebsk Railway. It was granted urban-type settlement status in 1941.

Administrative and Municipal Status

Within the framework of administrative divisions, Plyussa serves as the administrative center of Plyussky District. As an administrative division, it is incorporated within Plyussky District as the settlement of Plyussa. As a municipal division, the settlement of Plyussa is incorporated as Plyussa Urban Settlement within Plyussky Municipal District.

Economy

The economy of Plyussa is largely based on agriculture and forestry. The Saint Petersburg – Vitebsk Railway is an important part of the local infrastructure.

Geography

Plyussa is situated in a flat, wooded area typical of the Pskov Oblast. The Plyussa River flows through the settlement. The climate is humid continental.
