William Hammond (hymnist)

William Hammond (1719-1783) was an English Calvinistic Baptist minister and hymn writer. Born in Battle, Sussex, he was ordained as a minister in 1743. Hammond preached at various Baptist churches, primarily in and around London. While he was an eloquent preacher, he is best remembered for his hymns.

Hammond's most famous hymn is "Awake, and Sing the Song." He wrote around 150 hymns, many of which reflect his strong Calvinistic beliefs and often focus on themes of grace, salvation, and the glory of God. Though not all his hymns achieved widespread popularity, a significant number were included in various hymn collections of the 18th and 19th centuries. He published a collection of his hymns in 1745 entitled Psalms, Hymns, and Spiritual Songs, composed and published according to the appointment of the elders and brethren of the several churches of Christ in and about London.

Beyond his hymn writing, Hammond was a controversial figure within Baptist circles due to his strong Calvinistic views and, at times, unorthodox opinions. He eventually left the ministry and practiced medicine later in life. While his career as a minister was marked by periods of instability, his hymns continue to be valued by those who appreciate the theological depth and devotional spirit of 18th-century hymnody.
