1906 U.S. Open (golf)
The 1906 U.S. Open was the 12th U.S. Open, held June 28-29 at the Golf Course at Rochester Country Club in Rochester, New York. Alec Smith won his only major championship, by two strokes over his older brother John Smith.
The tournament was played over 72 holes of stroke play. Alec Smith led after the first round with a 73. John Smith took the lead after the second round with a 76 for a total of 150. In the third round, Alec Smith carded a 74, retaking the lead and heading into the final round with a three-shot advantage. Despite a final round 78, Alec Smith was able to secure the victory.
The tournament was notable for the low scoring conditions and the significant challenge the course presented to the field. The rough was particularly penal, contributing to high scores for many players.
Amateur Eben Byers finished in a tie for third place, showcasing the competitive level of amateur golf at the time. Walter Travis, the 1900 U.S. Amateur champion and 1902 British Amateur champion, finished well down the leaderboard.
