Brskovo

Brskovo was a medieval mining town located in present-day Montenegro, known primarily for its silver mines. It was one of the most important economic centers of the Serbian medieval state, particularly during the reigns of the Nemanjić dynasty. Brskovo flourished from the 13th to the 15th centuries, attracting merchants and miners from various parts of Europe, including Saxons, who brought with them advanced mining techniques.

The town's importance stemmed from its rich ore deposits, making it a significant source of silver for the Serbian rulers. This silver was used to mint coins and finance the state's activities. Brskovo had its own customs office, court, and other institutions, indicative of its autonomous status within the kingdom. It was governed by a knez (duke) and other officials.

The decline of Brskovo began in the 15th century, largely due to Ottoman incursions and the overall decline of the Serbian medieval state. The town was eventually conquered by the Ottomans, and its mining activities gradually diminished. Today, little remains of the once-prosperous town of Brskovo, though archaeological research continues to shed light on its rich history. Its legacy lives on in historical records and its contribution to the economic and political power of medieval Serbia.
