Jaffna Electoral District (1947–1989)

The Jaffna Electoral District was a multi-member electoral district in Ceylon (later Sri Lanka) that existed from 1947 to 1989. It was established by the Ceylon Parliamentary Elections Order in Council of 1946 to elect Members of Parliament to the House of Representatives of Ceylon.

The district was geographically based on the Jaffna District in the Northern Province. Initially, it elected three members in the 1947 election. The number of members it elected varied throughout its existence, peaking at four members in subsequent elections before being standardized.

In 1978, the Second Amendment to the Constitution of Sri Lanka introduced proportional representation and multi-member electoral districts were replaced with multi-member electoral districts known as Electoral Districts. The Jaffna Electoral District was therefore abolished for the 1989 general election. A new Jaffna Electoral District was created, encompassing the same geographic area but operating under the proportional representation system.
