Nan Hu
Nan Hu (南湖), meaning "South Lake" in Mandarin Chinese, commonly refers to a lake in China. Multiple lakes bear this name, most notably:
-
Nan Hu (Jiaxing): A historic lake located in Jiaxing, Zhejiang Province. It is famous as the site where the First National Congress of the Communist Party of China secretly reconvened and concluded in 1921, after being forced to move from Shanghai. A replica of the original boat used for the congress meetings is moored on the lake and serves as a symbol of the CPC's origins. The lake and surrounding area are a significant historical and cultural site, attracting numerous visitors.
-
Nan Hu (Wuhan): A large lake located in the Hongshan District of Wuhan, Hubei Province. It is one of the largest lakes within the city limits of Wuhan. The lake is surrounded by residential areas, universities, and research institutions. It serves as a recreational area for the city's residents and plays a role in the city's ecosystem.
-
Other Nan Hu lakes: Several other smaller lakes across China are also named Nan Hu. The term simply describes a lake located to the south within a given region or city. These smaller lakes may be significant locally but are generally less well-known nationally or internationally than the Jiaxing and Wuhan examples.
