William H. Barnes (jurist)
William H. Barnes (1835-1913) was an American jurist who served as a Justice of the Supreme Court of California.
Born in Pomfret, Vermont, Barnes received his legal education and was admitted to the bar in 1857. He moved to California and established a successful law practice. He was appointed to the Supreme Court of California in 1879 and served until 1886. During his tenure, he participated in numerous significant cases that shaped California law. After leaving the court, Barnes returned to private practice in San Francisco. He was also involved in various civic and community organizations. Barnes died in 1913, leaving behind a legacy as a respected legal professional in California's early history. His contributions to the state's jurisprudence are still studied and referenced today.
