Shala (tribe)
The Shala are a Tibeto-Burman ethnic group residing primarily in Arunachal Pradesh, India. They are concentrated in the Kra Daadi district. The Shala are considered one of the 26 major tribes of Arunachal Pradesh recognized by the state government. They speak a language classified within the Sino-Tibetan language family, though specific linguistic affiliation within the family is subject to ongoing research and documentation. Culturally, the Shala have a rich tradition of oral literature, unique rituals, and distinctive social customs. Agriculture, primarily shifting cultivation, forms the backbone of their economy. Traditional religious beliefs and practices centered on nature worship and ancestor veneration are prevalent, though increasing numbers are adopting Christianity. Due to their remote location and limited interaction with the outside world until relatively recently, preservation of their cultural heritage is a growing concern alongside efforts to improve access to education and healthcare.
