West River (Maryland)

West River is a tidal tributary of the Chesapeake Bay located in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, United States. It is approximately 13 miles (21 km) long.

The river is formed by the confluence of several smaller creeks and streams, including Muddy Creek, Bear Neck Creek, and Parish Creek. It flows generally eastward and southeastward, widening significantly before entering the Chesapeake Bay south of Annapolis.

West River is a popular area for boating, fishing, and other recreational activities. Its shoreline is dotted with marinas, yacht clubs, and waterfront residences. Historically, the river was a significant transportation route for agricultural products, particularly tobacco, from the surrounding farmlands to markets in Annapolis and beyond.

The West River is part of the South River watershed. Efforts are underway to improve water quality in the river and the Chesapeake Bay through various initiatives aimed at reducing pollution from agricultural runoff, stormwater runoff, and other sources. The West River Federation is an organization dedicated to protecting and restoring the health of the river.
