Results of the 2008 Western Australian state election (Legislative Assembly)

The 2008 Western Australian state election was held on Saturday, 6 September 2008, to elect all 59 members to the Legislative Assembly and all 36 members to the Legislative Council. The incumbent Labor government, led by Premier Alan Carpenter, was defeated by the Liberal Party, led by Colin Barnett, after two terms in office.

The election resulted in a hung parliament, with neither Labor nor the Liberal/National coalition winning a majority of seats in the Legislative Assembly. The final seat count was Labor 28, Liberal 24, National 5, and Independent 2.

Following the election, the National Party entered into an agreement with the Liberal Party to form a minority coalition government, with Colin Barnett becoming Premier. The Nationals were offered ministerial portfolios in exchange for their support. The two independent members, Janet Woollard and John Bowler, provided confidence and supply to the Barnett government.

Key issues during the election campaign included resource management, infrastructure development, public transport, and the cost of living. Opinion polls prior to the election suggested a close race between the two major parties.

The composition of the Legislative Council also changed as a result of the election, with the balance of power shifting away from Labor. This made it more difficult for the Barnett government to pass legislation.

Detailed results, including seat-by-seat breakdowns, candidate information, and voting statistics, are available from the Western Australian Electoral Commission (WAEC).
