Enchantment (band)
Enchantment was an American R&B and soul vocal group that formed in Detroit, Michigan, in the late 1960s. The group is best known for their smooth harmonies and ballads, and their close association with Motown Records, though they were never actually signed to the label itself.
The original members of Enchantment consisted of Emanuel "E.J." Johnson, Joe Thomas, Bobby Nelson, Edgar "Mickey" Clanton, and Dave Banks. E.J. Johnson served as the group's lead vocalist and songwriter.
Enchantment's career gained momentum when they signed with Roadshow Records, a subsidiary of Motown, in 1976. They released their self-titled debut album, Enchantment, in 1976, which featured the hit singles "Gloria" and "Call on Me."
Their success continued with subsequent albums, including Once Upon a Dream (1977), which contained the popular song "It's You That I Need," and Journey to the Land Of...Enchantment (1979). These albums solidified their reputation for romantic ballads and sophisticated vocal arrangements.
In the early 1980s, the group moved to RCA Records. They continued to record and perform, though their commercial success waned somewhat compared to their earlier years. Despite this, Enchantment maintained a loyal following and continued to tour and record new material.
Enchantment's music is often cited as an influence on later R&B vocal groups. Their songs continue to be played on "Quiet Storm" radio formats and remain popular among fans of classic soul music. The group's legacy rests on their ability to create heartfelt and emotionally resonant songs that have stood the test of time. Individual members have pursued solo projects at various points in time, but the group has occasionally reunited for performances and special projects.
