West Java

West Java (Indonesian: Jawa Barat) is a province of Indonesia. It is located in the western part of the island of Java, with Jakarta forming an enclave within its northwestern border. The provincial capital is Bandung.

West Java is one of Indonesia's most populous provinces, boasting a rich cultural heritage influenced by Sundanese traditions. The province borders Banten to the west, Jakarta and Central Java to the east, and the Java Sea to the north and the Indian Ocean to the south.

The province is characterized by diverse landscapes, ranging from fertile volcanic highlands to coastal plains. Agriculture plays a significant role in the economy, with rice, tea, rubber, and various fruits and vegetables being major crops. Historically, West Java was the heartland of the Sundanese kingdoms, including the Kingdom of Sunda, which flourished for centuries before the arrival of European powers. The province has played a significant role in the history of Indonesia, including its struggle for independence.

The population of West Java is predominantly Sundanese, although there are also significant Javanese and other ethnic groups present. The Sundanese language is widely spoken, alongside Indonesian, the national language. Islam is the dominant religion.

West Java is divided into several regencies (kabupaten) and cities (kota), each with its own administrative structure. The province is governed by a governor and a provincial legislature.
