James Sutherland (Canadian politician)

James Sutherland (1849 – 1905) was a Canadian businessman and politician. He served as a Member of Parliament in the House of Commons of Canada representing the riding of Oxford North from 1888 to 1905.

Born in Zorra Township, Oxford County, Ontario, Sutherland was a prominent Liberal politician. He served in various cabinet positions under Prime Ministers Wilfrid Laurier and Alexander Mackenzie. His portfolios included Minister without Portfolio (1899-1900), Minister of Marine and Fisheries (1900-1902), and Minister of Public Works (1902-1905).

Sutherland played a significant role in shaping Canadian public policy during his time in office. He was actively involved in debates and legislation pertaining to trade, infrastructure development, and resource management. His contributions to the Laurier government were considered valuable, particularly his experience and knowledge of Ontario politics. He died in office in 1905.
