Tambov

Tambov is a city in western Russia, the administrative center of Tambov Oblast. It is situated on the Tsna River, a tributary of the Moksha.

History:

Founded in 1636 as a fortified point on the southern border of the Tsardom of Russia, Tambov was intended to protect against Tatar raids. It gradually developed into a significant trading and administrative center. In the 18th century, it became the seat of a governorate. During the Russian Civil War (1917-1922), the Tambov Governorate was the site of a large-scale peasant uprising known as the Tambov Rebellion (also known as the Antonov Rebellion), brutally suppressed by the Bolshevik government.
